CDC’s chemical disinfectants guide gives these points:
- The best germ-killing strength is 60% to 90% alcohol in water. Activity falls sharply below 50%.
- It evaporates fast, so it is hard to keep a surface wet long enough unless the item is immersed.
- It does not destroy bacterial spores and is not recommended for sterilizing medical or surgical materials.
- It can swell or harden some rubber and plastic and is flammable.
Home use
CDC’s summary lists 70% isopropyl alcohol for 5 minutes as an immersion option for reusable items that touch mucous membranes at home. That example is for items such as tracheostomy tubes, not razors, so treat it as a guide to strength and time only.
