Ohio State University Extension’s fact sheet on ants in and around the home tells readers to put ants for identification in a watertight vial with “isopropyl or 70 percent alcohol (not water).” That preserves a specimen; it is not a treatment.
What it recommends instead
- Eliminate food and water sources.
- Place bait stations on the ant trails, away from children and pets. Slow-acting baits that workers carry back to the nest work better than fast-acting ones that kill only foragers.
- Do not coat walls, floors or counters with sprays. Ants detect residues and avoid treated areas, so the colony survives.
- Find and treat the nest when possible. Professional help is often the best option for an established infestation.
