What Are the Rules Around Drinking Alcohol After Taking Azo?
AZO Urinary Pain Relief (phenazopyridine) does not mention alcohol on its Drug Facts label. It only relieves urinary pain, burning, urgency and frequency from a urinary tract infection for up to 2 days (12 tablets); it does not cure the infection. If you are also taking an antibiotic for the UTI, check that medicine's label, because some antibiotics do interact with alcohol.

AZO and alcohol: what the label says
The Drug Facts label for AZO Urinary Pain Relief (phenazopyridine hydrochloride 95 mg, revised January 2026) does not mention alcohol. It is for relief from urinary pain, burning, urgency and frequency associated with urinary tract infections.
What AZO does not do
It eases symptoms; it does not treat the infection. A UTI needs a doctor’s assessment and often an antibiotic, and some antibiotics have their own alcohol warnings, so read that label or ask the pharmacist.
Label directions and warnings
- Adults and children 12 and older: 2 tablets three times a day with or after meals, for up to two days. Do not use for more than 2 days (12 tablets) without a doctor.
- Ask a doctor first if you have kidney disease or allergies to foods, preservatives or dyes; do not use it with G6PD deficiency unless a doctor approves.
- Your urine will turn reddish-orange; it can stain soft contact lenses and can interfere with urine, glucose and ketone lab tests.
Alcohol and a UTI
We found no official source that says alcohol makes a UTI worse, so we do not claim it. The label says not to use AZO for more than 2 days without consulting a doctor.
