What counts as one standard drink?

According to the NIAAA, each of these is about one standard drink: 12 fl oz of regular beer (about 5% alcohol), 8–10 fl oz of malt liquor (about 7%), 5 fl oz of table wine (about 12%), 3–4 fl oz of fortified wine (about 17%), 2–3 fl oz of liqueur (about 24%) and a 1.5 fl oz shot of distilled spirits (about 40%). A 12 oz beer at 10% alcohol is two standard drinks.

How the calculator works

Pure alcohol (ml) = amount x ABV / 100. Grams of alcohol use the NIAAA figure of 14 g in 0.6 fl oz (about 0.79 g per ml); standard drinks = grams / 14. UK units use the NHS figure of 10 ml of pure alcohol per unit. One US fluid ounce is 29.574 ml (NIST).
